Seafood and Cholesterol

Some seafood does contain a significant amount of cholesterol; for example squid, lobster, prawns, shrimps, smoked mackerel, winkles, all contain levels over 100 mcg per 100g.

It should be noted that eggs contain almost 400 mcg per 100g of cholesterol. However, we now know that it is not the level of cholesterol in a food that drives up blood cholesterol levels, but the level of saturated fat and trans-fats. All seafood is low in saturated fat and trans fats. So in the same way that people with high blood cholesterol are told it is perfectly safe to have an egg a day, the level of cholesterol in seafood should not be a concern.
